Academy Membership

Members of the Academy of Educators for the Gifted, Talented, and Creative are professional educators who have demonstrated commitment to educational excellence for exceptionally able students in Colorado. Members include classroom teachers, gifted education specialists, administrators, psychologists, counselors, and others.

Since the inception of the Academy, a new Class of members is inducted each year. The Class of 1992 included Founding Members.

Membership in the Academy is open to any qualified professional educator who can document qualifications listed below. Documentation is submitted in a professional portfolio divided into sections for each qualification criterion.

 

Qualifications for Membership

1. Status as a current or former professional educator;

2. Minimum of 9 semester hours (12 quarter hours) of graduate course work in the education of gifted students, or comparable professional preparation.

3. Minimum of one graduate course in statistics, research, measurement, and/or evaluation.

4. Minimum of three years substantial practical experience with gifted youth.

5. Substantial demonstrated service or contribution to gifted and talented education.

Application for membership and professional portfolio are submitted to Academy Membership Governor

September 10 - November 30

Board of Governors review professional portforlios of all applicants

by December 1

Invitations for membership in the Academy sent to qualified applicants

January

New class members inducted into the Academy at Annual Induction Meeting and Dinner

 

Benefits of Membership

  1. Peer recognition for professional training and professionalism in the field of gifted education.
  2. Networking with other members, and access to a directory of all Academy members.
  3. Leadership opportunities in the state.
  4. Opportunities for mentoring others in the field who are at an earlier stage in their training in gifted education

Honorary Membership

In addition to regular membership in the Academy, Honorary certificates of membership in the Academy are awarded to selected educators who have made significant contributions to gifted education in Colorado through long-term commitment to professional development and/or direct education to gifted children and youth in the state. Honorary Members of the Academy are listed below.
